A return to the tales of the Mabinogion, and revisiting a character i have illustrated before. Olwen was the daughter of the giant Ysbaddaden and the heroine of the tale "Culhwch and Olwen" as recounted in the Mabinogion, thought to be the earliest story to make reference to King Arthur, centuries before the more well known romances. In the story, Ysbaddaden is fated to die if Olwen ever marries, so when Culhwch came to court her, he was given a series of immensely difficult tasks to complete before to win her hand. With the help of his cousin King Arthur, Culhwch succeeds and the giant dies, allowing Olwen to marry her suitor. She is described as a vision of beauty, wearing a flaming-red dress with a red-gold torc and golden rings, "hair yellower than the broom", pale skin and white flowers springing up where she walked (Olwen translates as "white footprint" or "white path").
