If this is a Scandinavian village this could be a very good omen actually. Freyja the goddess of love, war, and magic, rode a chariot pulled by two black cats, so seeing a black cat, meant Freyja was near and the cats represented her blessing. ... mind you I wouldn't want to see her chariot teams hair balls =O
