Last episode, LT Debbie Davis Ford had just joined USS Columbia. It was late 1995 and the ship was working up - undergoing initial crew training, preparing over 400 men to operate an entirely new ship-type to get the most out of it. It is now June 14, 1996, and Columbia is entering the Chinese port at Qingdao (English pronounciation guide: Zing tao), where the Eugenics Wars surrender ceremony will be conducted. Former President Jimmy Carter is aboard to represent the United States and see to its interests. The day's schedule is to make port, dress the ship, feed the crew, give tours to Chinese citizens until 1500 (3:00 pm), and then make preparations to host the military commanders of the various nations involved in the war the next morning. The ship has slowed to 6 knots in order to safely navigate the narrow entrance to the bay where the port is located. Everyone is thoroughly prepared for a day of ceremonies. That may not be the way things are going to go. The events at the end of this episode don't square with expectations. So what is going on? Are the two jets just buzzing the Americans in a high-spirited welcome? If so, will someone aboard Columbia get jumpy and cause an international incident at this delicate point in the course of events? Are the lookouts correct? Did they actually see missiles launch from the jets? If so, will Columbia be able to defend itself in time? Or will the fact everyone is at Party Stations mean massive casualties from a surprise attack? If it's a surprise attack, by who?
