Description
We are still on the USS Forrestal’s 1956 shakedown tour. Here we see a North American FJ-3M Fury from VF-21. It was one of the first squadrons on the USS Forrestal to be painted entirely in sea gull grey. Other squadrons had a mix of grey and blue aircraft. It was the time when Navy changed blue to sea gull grey and white, or 'atomic grey', as it was called back then. CDR Ralph L. Werner, commanding Air Task Group (ATG) 181, made the first fixed wing aircraft landing on board USS Forrestal with a FJ-3 Fury and was the first jet to land on USS Forrestal. Unfortunately, I didn’t have an FJ-3 Fury, but I did have a good F-86. I rebuild this, adding a hook and folding wings, as best I could. It’s not perfect, but only an expert would spot the differences. By the way, in the background we can see a North American AJ-1 Savage. More in one of the next pictures.
