Back to the myths of Wales ...
Rhiannon is one of the main protagonists of the First and Third Branches of the Mabinogion. I shan't recount the stories of her here (instead I encourage you to read the Mabinogi). She is a mult-layered character, partly supernatural, politically adept, sophisticated, a devoted mother and famed for her beauty. She has been described by the folklorist Prof. Ronald Hutton as "one of the great female personalities in World literature; there is in fact, nobody quite like her in previous human literature".
She is strongly associated with horses; her first appreance in the tales has her clad in shining gold brocade and riding a white horse that was uncatchable. She is also associated with a trio of magical birds, "Adar Rhiannon", whose song could both wake the dead and soothe the living into a deep sleep, no matter how far away they were. As with many figues in Celtic myth, she has been appropriated by modern pagans as goddess of pretty much everything bar the kitchen sink, but there you go...

Lit using the "sun sky" option in iray; dialled in for a late afternoon in mid July, Pembrokeshire, where much of the story of the first branch unfolds, and where the hill where Pwyll first sees Rhiannon is supposed to be.
