Maggie had trained for this show for months. Her boots were polished, her jacket pressed, and her horse Harry was groomed so neatly he looked like he belonged on a postage stamp. She felt unstoppable, maybe a bit too confident in her own skills. Harry, however, had other plans. They approached the final jump: a beautiful fence decorated with lush green plants. The crowd hushed. Maggie leaned forward, heels down, eyes up, already picturing the ribbon. Harry gathered himself, launched…and then....mid-air his ears twitched. In an act of pure chaos, Harry slammed on the brakes in mid-jump, front hooves skidding into the rail. Maggie flew forward, arms windmilling, her visions of a ribbon rapidly slipping away. Too late.Harry calmly lowered his head and began chewing the greenery like a cow at a salad bar. Maggie, meanwhile, was clinging to his neck like a flag in a hurricane. The judge dropped their clipboard. A child gasped. Someone snorted with laughter. “Harry!” Maggie hissed. “We are in a COMPETITION.” Harry blinked at her, a leaf hanging from his mouth, clearly offended by her tone. He continued chewing, unfazed, while Maggie slid the rest of the way off, landing in a surprisingly graceful if unintended dismount. The announcer cleared his throat. “And… we appear to have a snack break.” Maggie stood, dusted herself off, and glared at Harry, who looked back as if to say, You saw the plants too. Don’t act like you’re not impressed.Harry snorted, swallowed the last leaf, and strutted off proudly, undefeated, well-fed, and absolutely certain he had nailed that round.
