NASA's LUT (Lunar Unit Transporter) vehicle is how NASA gets the rockets and other space vehicles from the Vehicle Assembly Station (VAS) out to one of their launch pads. Along a 9 hour, 4.2 mile journey to the launchpad, the crawler moves the rocket, the tower structure including its elevator system, electrical and water system, the entire works in the platform, to its destination at a whopping 1 mile per hour, with necessary stops and turns along the way. The Crawler, that vehicle with the yellow tractor treads on it underneath the LUT rocket platform, has a jacking system that keeps the rocket and rig plum level along the journey so no worries about anything on the platform teetering or tipping over. A crew of about 12 to 14 people inside the crawler as well as walking around outside the crawler keep close supervision on the process of the journey. Then the rocket along with its associated structure and equipment on the platform are lowered into position upon those four support posts on the launchpad and then engineers back that crawler outta there and off the launchpad so the rocket can then be readied for its next flight.
