For some reason the book looks like a 3D print. It is surprisingly glossy.
As contedesfees said, it is probably lacquered, which is why it looks shiny :)
Leather book covers were often painted with lacquer to preserve them, especially if the book was valuable or much-respected.
I believe it was lacquered; it did look like it was, at least :)
