Car manufacturers used to have a completely different view of their car building art.
For example, by hinging the door to the B-pillar, they gave the ladies driving their cars the opportunity to show off their shapely, slender legs.
They were real aesthetes ;)

Sometimes one learns something new. Here the term "suicde doors". I was not sure if this term is also used in the English/American language. In German this is also called "Selbstmörder Türen".
